Carving 2013
The annual Memorial weekend wood carving jamboree was again held in Boise and of course Kim, his brother, Dave, and I were exited to go. But, to add to the fun, this year their other brother, Doug, flew up from California and joined us! Doug is a novice carver, but no one was worried about him catching on quickly.
The Olsen brothers were fortunate to have another Olsen, Ryan, as their instructor. Ryan has quite a history with the Olsens beginning years ago when Ross and Joan attended with us when it was held in Twin Falls. Ryan was quickly "adopted" by Ross and Joan when they found that he had come to the Jamboree alone. That first year Ryan attended Cleve Taylor's class with Kim and Joan. It was his first year carving and the knife he used to carve with was an old kitchen steak knife! Cleve took pity on the new, yet talented, carver and donated a few tools to him.
Every year since, Kim and Dave have made a really big deal about joining with Ryan as the Olsen brothers. They quite often said to Ryan, "I'm telling mom on you!" and other sibling jabs and the three of them have become really good friends. Each year it was a treat to listen as Ryan sang a patriotic song on Memorial Day. He is a very accomplished opera singer. I even had him sing Happy Birthday to Kim one year.
Ryan is extremely talented and very artistic. He worked really hard and a year ago was inducted into the Caricature Carvers of America. This year was the first year that he taught at the Jamboree.
Since Doug was new to carving, the brothers decided to play a fun trick on Ryan. They went into the DI and picked up several different kitchen knives with a wood block. On the first morning of class Doug pulled out the block of knives and with a totally straight face said to Ryan, "this is my first time carving, I sure hope that I brought the right tools". At first Ryan just looked - then he started grinning. Doug never cracked a smile, but soon Ryan was laughing hysterically and accusing Kim and Dave of putting him up to it.
Later that morning, Cleve came in for a visit. When he found out about the joke, he laughed until tears came out of his eyes! For he also remembered the first time Ryan came with his steak knife!
All of the Olsen boys had a fabulous time carving this year.
It was awesome to have Doug join us! And of course I totally enjoyed my time alone in the hotel room - I even enjoyed it when all of the boys came back!
It is a trip that I seriously look forward to each year, especially the Cold Stone ice cream bond that Dave and I have!
The only downside to the weekend was that Doug was fighting a nasty cold (which despite my best intentions I caught and ended up sick in bed for 6 days!) and Dave was exhausted from working tons of overtime the weeks before.
