A Quick Trip to Bob and Kate's with Dad
My dad was SO excited for the plane ride! He didn’t like the crowds, security, or
wandering through the maze of the airport, but by the time we got on the plane
he was ready for the adventure. As we
descended into the Spokane airport we hit some turbulence. I asked him how he was doing, and he said,
“Oh that was FUN” with a huge grin on his face!
We met Bob and Kate, picked up luggage and then headed toward
their home. We were quite suprised to see that Bob's beard is just as . . . um. . . fascinating as dad's!
They live just outside
Spirit Lake near Coeur D’Alene. On the
way we stopped at a great place in Ruthdrum called O’Malley’s for dinner.
The anticipation to see Bob and Kate was warranted! It was so great to visit with them! It doesn’t matter how long it has been since
we visited last, it always feels like home when we are with them!
They house they built is absolutely gorgeous. I am in awe of their decision to leave urban
California and relocate to this extremely rural area. When they arrived Spirit Lake had a
population of just over 600. The came
here with another family and together they built two houses, doing all of the
work themselves, while they lived together in a barn.
The next morning we
hopped into the truck and took a site-seeing trip to Spirit Lake and to
Lake Pend Oreiile and then we drove to Coeur D’Alene and walked along the
boardwalk of the Coeur D’Alene Lake. Who
knew that there were so many lakes in this area? And they are all gorgeous! The boardwalk boasts that it is the longest
floating boardwalk in the world.

After a great lunch of Mexican food we came back to the
house for a quick nap, and then Bob took me for a ride in the hills in his
Toyota Landcruiser. Dad followed along
behind us on a four-wheeler, eating our dust most of the way.
We traveled along some logging trails and
enjoyed some fantastic scenery. The
trail took us right into Spirit Lake where we stopped and enjoyed an ice cream
cone before heading back to enjoy the dinner Kate made for us.
I am sad that I have to head out in the morning. Visiting with Bob and Kate has been
fantastic! I love them so much. The very best part has been watching how they
interact with my dad. They truly love
him! They both have been so kind and
eager to make sure that he is comfortable, yet they encourage him to exert his
independence. They are quick to help if
he loses his balance and are willing to listen to his stories over and
over. I know that he will be in great
hands over the next three weeks.
